Note: automakers typically report separate "industrial" and "financial services" balance sheets — the financial arm (auto loans and leasing) carries structurally higher leverage that isn't comparable to industrial company debt. Screen industrial net debt specifically, not consolidated figures that blend the two.
Operating margin, and its trend through the cycle
Automotive operating margins are structurally thin (typically mid-single-digit to low-double-digit percentages even for well-run manufacturers) and highly cycle-sensitive. The trend — is margin improving or deteriorating relative to the same point in the previous cycle — is more informative than the absolute level in any single period.
Capex intensity, specifically EV-transition capex
The EV transition has forced a structural step-up in capital expenditure across the sector — new battery plants, platform redesigns, software investment — that doesn't show up in a standard operating margin screen but materially affects free cash flow. Screening free cash flow (not just operating income) alongside capex-to-revenue trends captures this transition cost directly.
Free cash flow, not just earnings
Given the capex intensity above, free cash flow is arguably a more reliable profitability signal than reported net income for automotive names during the EV transition period specifically — a company can show reasonable operating margins while free cash flow is meaningfully depressed by transition-related capex.
Distinguishing cyclical trough from structural decline
This is the core analytical question for the sector, and no single metric answers it — the practical screening approach combines several signals:
Signs consistent with cyclical trough (potentially recoverable):
- Strong net cash / balance sheet position relative to peers
- Positive, if depressed, free cash flow
- Margin compression that tracks the broader industry cycle, not company-specific
- Market share stable or only modestly eroding
Signs consistent with structural decline (genuine value trap risk):
- Persistent market share loss specifically to EV-native competitors, not just cyclical weakness
- Free cash flow deeply negative even adjusted for elevated transition capex
- Deteriorating balance sheet trend (rising net debt) rather than a stable or improving one
- Margin compression that's worse than, and diverging from, the broader peer group — a company-specific problem, not an industry-wide cyclical one
Building a European automotive screen
