![]() How health-conscious consumers are weighing in on the future of ice cream STORY: MARROW: “Consumers want fewer calories, but they still maybe want a sweet treat.” :: Could demand for healthier foods shrink your ice cream? :: London, England / August 11, 2026 :: Alex Marrow, Chief Companies Correspondent "So, as more and more consumers are taking weight loss drugs, GLP-1 drugs, as they're also known, we wanted to look at how this is affecting the way people are eating food. We know that it suppresses appetites. But specifically with the hot weather, we looked at ice cream. // And essentially it comes down to reducing the number of calories that you put in a serving size. // They are also reformulating products to meet consumers who maybe want smaller portions, or who want something better for you in their ice cream - whether that's higher protein or fiber. // In the case of the Magnum Ice Cream Company, who we spoke to for this story, you may have seen their mini magnums, which are just a smaller size. They also have these, sort of, for the very small circular portions, in a pint-sized tub, the idea being that you could share them or you could just have one after dinner rather than having a whole ice cream. // One company we spoke to, Blue Bunny, has said it's been seeing consumers really wanting less high fructose corn syrup in products. So, they've been removing that. Also, companies are removing artificial flavorings and colorings. // Another trend that has been emerging among ice cream manufacturers is there's more popularity for lollies or popsicles. Effectively, flavored water on a stick. So, there's less dairy, there's less cream, it's overall fewer calories. // And that, in a nutshell, is what the manufacturers are trying to do. So, as consumer tastes change, they can come along that journey with them and still be there and still make sales.” The rise of appetite-suppressing GLP-1 drugs, demand for healthier foods and growing ingredient scrutiny are pushing manufacturers to reduce portion sizes, increase protein content in their recipes and clean up ingredients lists. U.S. ice cream sales volumes fell 1.5% year-on-year through June 13, according to NielsenIQ, while Boston Consulting Group research shows GLP-1 users cut frozen treat consumption by at least 10%. Yet manufacturers see little sign that consumers are abandoning ice cream altogether. Instead, ice cream makers are betting that shoppers will continue to indulge, provided treats come with fewer calories, more protein and simpler ingredient lists. The shift reflects a broader challenge facing the industry as changing eating habits reshape what consumers expect from indulgent foods. Around 16 million Americans are taking GLP-1 medicines, according to Boston Consulting Group, with the number expected to climb significantly by the end of the decade. Food companies from Nestle to Conagra have been reformulating products as consumers seek more protein, fiber and nutritional benefits. The challenge for ice cream makers is preserving ice cream's appeal as an indulgence while adapting to shoppers who increasingly weigh nutritional value alongside taste. The wellness trend is not confined to the United States, raising questions about how ice cream brands stay relevant as eating habits evolve globally. | RReuters Videos

Magnum Ice Cream (ENXTAM:MICC) Stock May Be Fully Priced Despite Strong H1 Results Magnum Ice Cream stock has delivered a 20.8% gain year to date, yet the valuation checks still suggest the shares look expensive rather than a clear bargain. The 20.8% year to date return suggests sentiment has been positive and expectations are higher than they were at the start of 2026. Stronger recent sales, helped by hotter weather and new product formats, may support investor optimism, while an ongoing antitrust review in Turkey may limit how much investors are willing to pay for the...
