Cartier-owner Richemont gave a boost to the luxury sector on Wednesday after comfortably beating its Q1 sales forecast. The Swiss-based group, which also owns brands Piaget and Van Cleef & Arpels, saw accelerating demand for its jewellery and watches. And said its sales rose by a fifth to $7.24 billion in the three months to the end of June. The figure soared past analyst forecasts, with one branding it a “flabbergasting” result. Richemont's jewellery business in particular saw sales rise by close to a quarter, much better than the 13.5% forecasts. The result sent Richemont's shares 6% higher in early trading - while the Stoxx European Luxury 10 index, which includes industry giants like LVMH and Hermes, rose 2.5%. Investors were encouraged by the group’s positive comments on the greater China region, where sales rose at a double-digit rate.
