How the Iran war threatens global airlines

STORY: :: Why did Lufthansa shares drop over 10% after posting results? :: London, England / August 4, 2026 :: Joanna Plucińska, Europe Airlines and Travel Correspondent "So, what we've seen today with Lufthansa is that they've been hit quite hard by the spiralling cost of jet fuel, which is not unlike all of the other major European carriers. Lufthansa had hedged over 80% of its fuel for 2026, but still they're seeing that the cost is overpowering all of their projections. So, what they did was, they announced is, they would have a range potential for their operating profit for the year, which could either be lower than their earlier projection or still higher. But given the uncertainty in the next half of the year, they basically have been more cautious in putting out their outlook, which meant that shares were down over 10% after they announced their results today." :: How have global airlines been affected by the Iran War? "Well, airlines generally spend 30% to 40% of their budget on jet fuel, and so much jet fuel came through the Strait of Hormuz, came from the Middle East. So, I think, given how long this war has dragged on, it's been a real challenge and problem for the airlines to find a way around that given it's just inevitably going to impact their bottom line. So, we've seen a lot of airlines cut capacity, cut the amount of flights they have available. What they've seen is quite a few airlines pulling some of their planes out of service, which is what Lufthansa did today as well. They announced they were pulling out a whole bunch of their planes out of service, either temporarily or permanently. And, I think, what carriers are seeing is that, you know, people still want to travel even though ticket prices are going up given this jet fuel crisis, but it's still really difficult and what we could expect is a wave of bankruptcies once the peak summer season stops, which is coming up quite soon. And usually airlines sell far few fewer tickets in the fall and in the winter seasons and that's when they're really going to be impacted by this lack of income over the last few months given the war."
